When a beverage has been around since the ninth century, its normal brewing methods are bound to become a little tedious.
There are many ways to prepare coffee: black, with cream and sugar or perhaps a little nutmeg sprinkled on top. For coffee enthusiasts, there are countless ways to spice up this typically tame morning beverage.
Soda, spices, ice cream and alcohol can all be added to intensify the beverage's natural kick. The following recipes are sure to tantalize any coffee lover's palate:
NON-ALCOHOLIC
Coffee Float
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups of strong coffee
- 2 teaspoons of sugar
- 2/3 cups of cream
- 4 scoops of coffee-flavored ice cream
- 1 bottle of Coke
Preparation:
- Sweeten coffee with sugar and let chill
- Mix chilled coffee with cream
- Fill four glasses half full with the mixture
- Add a scoop of ice cream to each glass
- Top with Coke
Indian Spiced
Ingredients:
- 1 1/4 cups of water
- 4 pods of cardamom, slit lengthwise
- 1 cinnamon stick, broken in half
- A pinch of nutmeg
- 1 clove
- 2 cups of strong, freshly brewed coffee
- 1 cup of milk
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
Preparation:
- In a saucepan, bring water to a boil
- Stir in spices and let mixture simmer for five minutes
- Stir in brewed coffee
- In another saucepan, bring milk to a near boil
- Strain mixture into the milk
- Sweeten with sugar to taste
Mexican
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of water
- 1/4 cup of coarsely ground coffee beans
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
Preparation:
- In a saucepan, combine all ingredients
- After bringing to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer for five minutes
- Using a strainer, pour the coffee into mugs
Orange
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of strong coffee
- 1 cup of hot chocolate
- 2 oranges slices
- Whipped cream
- Cinnamon
Preparation:
- Mix coffee with hot chocolate
- Place one orange slice into two cups
- Pour the chocolate coffee mixture into each mug
- Top with whipped cream and garnish with cinnamon
ALCOHOLIC
Black Gold
Ingredients:
- 4 ounces of hot coffee
- 1/4 ounce of Triple Sec
- 1/4 ounce of Amaretto
- 1/4 ounce of Irish Cream
- 1/4 ounce of hazelnut liquor
- Dash of cinnamon Schnapps
- Whipped cream
Preparation:
- Stir all ingredients into a mug
- Add a dollop of whipped cream
Cajun Coffee
Ingredients:
- 3 cups of hot coffee
- 6 tablespoons of molasses
- 6 tablespoons of dark rum
- Whipped cream
Preparation:
- In a saucepan, heat coffee and molasses
- Add rum
- Serve with whipped cream
Orleans Coffee
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of coffee
- 1 orange
- 5 tablespoons of cognac
- 5 tablespoons of Benedictine
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
- 3 whole cloves
Preparation:
- Strip off a large piece of orange zest and poke the cloves into it
- Place with brown sugar in the bottom of a mug
- In a saucepan, mix cognac and Benedictine
- Light the alcohol with a match and pour flaming into the mug
- Fill mug with coffee and serve
